Harriers AGM Run 2010

Promptly at 6 pm on a Tuesday evening in January, GrandMaster Tommy Chin’s horn sounded and the whole pack of us rushed out from the Club, following the trail set by Arthur Hoi and his family. RLC Harriers are indeed fortunate that the well-maintained Lake Garden is figuratively and literally at our doorstep and all runs emanating from the Club have built-in paths in the Lake Garden to allow hashers to warm up.

Towards the other end of the Lake Garden, the trail ended at a check and the front runners scrambled in all directions in a bid to be the first to spot where the trail would resume. Soon came the calls of “On! On!” from the direction of the road leading to Parliament and everybody moved towards that. Then it was down the sides of Parliament House and up another couple of hills before the paper trail led inexorably into the famous Dragon Trail.

Under the canopy of rich tropical vegetation, we ran along the cool stream before emerging at the ring road leading to the Club. Very soon, we were home, slaking our thirst with well-earned water and Isomax.

After a quick shower, we reassembled at the Banquet Hall to await the start of the Annual General Meeting, presided over by the newly-elected GC member, Mr Ng Boon Puey. At last, a Chairman who is also a hasher! The nomination and seconding came fast and furious and before we knew it, we had elected the five-man subcommittee for the coming year.

The formalities over, the Circle was conducted to give thanks to the previous Mismanagement and to welcome the new. Beer flowed to accompany the finest cuisine that our Bunga Raya Restaurant could muster up.

Here is looking forward to another year of fun hashing. On! On!

Chairman : Ng Boon Puey
Deputy Chairman : Dr Yap Chung Mui
Grand Master : Veloo
Joint Masters : Arthur Hoi & Steven Khoo
On-Sec : Jim Poh
On-Cash : Uncle Yap

JOM KITA MAIN GOLF!!

Twenty RLC Golf Section Members battled it out at the SSG Beringin Golf Course on Saturday 16 January 2010. This was the Annual President’s Team Vs RLC Senior Golfers Team playing for a Challenge Trophy donated by Immediate Past President Mr. Patrick Chiam. The truth of the matter is that most of the players that day were aged over 55 and thus fall into the Senior Golfers Category. The convenor had a difficult time in dividing the field to ensure fairness all round bearing in mind he was also the team captain for the Seniors Team.

It was not a serious inter team event at all. It turned out to be a fun day where both teams emerged winners in one way or another. The Senior Golfers Team won the match when you calculate in the official way i.e. by comparing the combined scores of the best four pairs in each team. However, the President’s Team could also claim they were the winner when you compare the total five pairs’ scores from each team.

Whatever, the result was not important at all. What matters was everyone had a good time interacting with the new President, Dato’ A Sani Karim who has been a strong supporter of RLC golf activities throughout the years.

Unfortunately we could not hold our planned AGM after the game on the 16th January since there were not enough members present to form a quorum. The meeting was postponed to 29th January just before the Golf Section BBQ. The 2009/2010 Sub Committee has actually planned a series of activities for 2010 to be tabled at the first new Sub Committee Meeting on Tuesday, the 2nd February 2010.

The proposal includes five (5) weekday social games at what is termed as up market golf venues e.g. RSGC, Tropicana, Glenmarie, and KGSAAS. Three (3) medal competitions, four (4) games involving other Clubs, and the Annual Championship, all to be played on either Saturday or Sunday, making a total of eight (8) 18 hole weekend games.

Besides that there are three inland tours to choose from i.e. East Malaysia Tour, Southern Peninsular and the Northern Sector Tour. The previous Sub Committee also proposes three overseas tours to choose from namely: Perth in Australia, Surabaya in Indonesia and Hua Hin in Thailand. The 2010/2011 Sub Committee will of course deliberate on this and only decide and proceed subject to interest and support of the members of the Golf Section. As far as in country (within peninsular Malaysia) tours and games, the minimum number of golfing participants for each game is sixteen (16). Any game with less than 16 will not be a good proposition while a good economical figure to hire a bus should be at least thirty (30).

Besides electing a new convenor and sub committee members for the 2010/2011 period the Golf Section Meeting on the 29th January 2010 adopted the resolutions that RLC will continue to play the inter club matches with Selesa Hills Golf Club and Bentong Golf Club.

As at 1st January 2010 the Golf Section has 317 members (2009: 321member). Our unaudited accounts show we have a cash balance of RM 28603.64 (2009: RM 35231.39). For the last couple of years ago we have been overspending an average of around RM 6200.00 per year. At this rate our funds will be exhausted in four to five years time. The new Committee will have to look into this when they take over.

The new line up of the Sub Committee is as follows:
Chairman: Lt Gen Dato Seri Mohd Yunus Tasi, Rtd.
Deputy Chairman: Sim Poh Khun.
Convenor: Shafeii Abd Gaffoor
SC Members: KK Nyam, Larry Lee, Dato’ Dina Rizal, Bobby Tan.

Let us give them all the support and encouragement to continue the good work done by the previous Convenors and Committee Members! 2009 was a good year; let us make 2010 even better!!

Junior Inter-Club Tennis Friendly

at Tropicana Club

The morning of Sunday 29th Nov 2009 dawned with some dark clouds, but the rain held off just long enough to allow RLC juniors to take on their counterparts in a friendly tennis game at Tropicana Club.

14 of our juniors took to the courts representing RLC in a tie comprising of 14 singles and 7 doubles matches. Coach Sam of Flaming Aces (our inhouse coaching team, who also run the junior program at Tropicana) took charge of setting up the match-play on a “strength-to-strength” basis, and coordinating the order of play.

Our juniors had the opportunity to experience Tropicana’s excellent outdoor facilities (2 artificial turf and 2 hard courts) and to mingle and socialize with their peers at the Tropicana Club, while broadening their match-play experience. Starting at 8:30 am, 21 matches were completed by lunchtime when, almost on cue, the rain came – by which time no one really cared as they were already tucking into a hearty chicken rice lunch kindly hosted for us (parents included) by the Tropicana Club.

Overall result: RLC won the tie by 14 matches to 7.

We would like to record our appreciation to our in-house coaching organization Flaming Aces for their efforts at facilitating this friendly game.
